Get coaching
This page explains what lacrosse's rule books, governing bodies and standards bodies publish. It is not a substitute for coaching from a qualified coach, and it does not replace medical advice.
Rules, not technique
This page records at which ages each body allows contact or checking. It does not describe how to check or make contact; that is taught in person by a qualified coach. A blow to the head or any suspected injury needs medical care.
What is confirmed and what is not
USA Lacrosse writes the youth rules for boys and girls aged 14U and below in the United States, in separate books. Every USA Lacrosse rules PDF, including the 2026 boys' and girls' youth rule books and their comparison charts, returned an error when the research for this site tried to open it on 23 October 2026. Some USA Lacrosse youth rules are reported in its own dated web articles; others rest only on search summaries of those PDFs. Because the rule books themselves could not be read, none of USA Lacrosse's current (2026) youth rules is confirmed here. The current USA Lacrosse rule book, and the officials on the day, are the authority.
| Body and game | Document | Rule or standard | Confirmed here |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA Lacrosse, boys' youth (14U and below) | 2026 Boys' Youth Rules | Rule book | No: 2024 changes reported in a July 2023 USA Lacrosse article; the 2026 book and age-by-age checking ages unconfirmed |
| USA Lacrosse, girls' youth (14U and below) | 2026 Girls' Youth Rules | Rule book | No: modified and transitional checking reported in an April 2025 USA Lacrosse article; the 2026 book and no-checking ages unconfirmed |
| Lacrosse Canada, box (all age groups) | 2026 Age and Stage Contact Standards (February 2026) | National safety standard, from the 2026 season | Yes, from Lacrosse Canada's own document |
USA Lacrosse boys' youth rules
From USA Lacrosse's own pages (dated; the 2026 book itself not read)
- The book. USA Lacrosse's boys' and men's rules page lists the 2026 Boys' Youth Rules and a Boys Youth Rules Comparison chart, and says the rules are designed to promote fair play and keep players safe. Its rules committee meets each year in late spring to consider changes for the next season.
- 2024 changes (USA Lacrosse, 19 July 2023). One-handed stick checks became allowed at 12U and 14U. USA Lacrosse did not adopt for youth play the high school option of a one-minute penalty for incidental contact to the head or neck, so youth play kept the two-minute penalty.
Unconfirmed
These rest on search summaries of USA Lacrosse PDFs that could not be opened:
- Body checking by age (2025 presentation). At 8U, 10U and 12U limited body contact is allowed but body checking is not. At 14U a body check is legal only when both players are upright and the checking player has both hands on the stick.
- Who may be contacted (2025 presentation). Youth body contact is limited to an opponent who has the ball or is within 3 yards of a loose ball, against 5 yards at high school level.
- Helmet loss (2026 rules). Losing a helmet becomes an illegal procedure at 12U and 14U, unless an opponent's direct contact to the head caused it.
- Format (2026 comparison chart). The chart covers 6U to 14U, with 12U and 14U both played 10 against 10 on a full field.
12U over time: two versions. The 2020 boys' youth rule book was reported to describe 12U as limited body contact and 14U as body checking legal with no take-out checks. The 2025 presentation was reported to say no body checking through 12U. These may be two wordings of the same rule or a change; neither document could be opened to tell.
USA Lacrosse girls' youth rules
Girls' lacrosse is a different game with a different rule book, and its youth rules stage checking by age.
From a USA Lacrosse article (April 2025; the 2026 book itself not read)
- Modified and transitional checking (USA Lacrosse, 4 April 2025). Modified checking applies at 11U and 12U, and transitional checking at 13U and 14U. USA Lacrosse calls transitional checking an incremental step toward full high school checking, and says it began with the 2019 season.
- The safety reason USA Lacrosse gives. Protecting players' heads from stick contact: checks are not allowed inside a 12-inch sphere around the ball carrier's head.
Unconfirmed
- Checking by age (2025 comparison chart). No checking at 6U, 8U and 10U; modified checking at 12U; transitional checking at 14U. The chart's age labels (12U, 14U) differ from those in USA Lacrosse's 2025 article (11U to 12U, 13U to 14U); the chart could not be opened to compare.
- Eyewear (2025 comparison chart). Required at 10U, 12U and 14U, and at 6U and 8U when NOCSAE balls are used.
- Formats (2026 girls' rule book). Full-field play at 14U to 12U, small-sided play at 10U and 8U to 6U, and a Flex6 format.
Lacrosse Canada: the 2026 box contact standard
Lacrosse Canada's "Box Lacrosse Safety Standards for Players, Coaches and Officials: Contact On and Off Ball", issued as its 2026 Age and Stage Contact Standards in a file dated February 2026, sets one national standard for contact, cross-checking and equal pressure across all age groups from the 2026 season. Lacrosse Canada says the aim is not to remove contact from box lacrosse but to make sure it is taught properly, introduced at the right stages and carried out safely.
| Age group | Stage in the 2026 standard |
|---|---|
| U7 | No cross-checking |
| U9 | Guided contact introduced |
| U11 | Controlled cross-checking introduced; no checks to the back |
| U13 | Progressive contact permitted within World Lacrosse standards |
| U15 | Full cross-checking permitted |
| U17 | The full World Lacrosse rule set |
| Junior (U22) | High-performance contact within World Lacrosse rules |
At every age the standard lists checks to the back or head, and driving or launching into players, as illegal contact. The document also describes how contact is taught; that part is not reproduced here.
Two further Canadian statements are unconfirmed. A separate Lacrosse Canada age-stage modifications document was reported in a search summary to say there is to be no body-checking, without showing which age bands that covers; a later version returned an error. Ontario Lacrosse was reported to say most house-league programmes use non-contact or modified-contact rules and that representative play introduces contact at U9 under strict regulation.
The adult rules youth players move toward
These are senior World Lacrosse rules, given for context; they are not youth rules.
- Men's field (2025-2027 v1.0, Rule 41.1). Body-checking is allowed only on an opponent who has the ball or is within 3 yards (2.74 m) of a loose ball or a ball in flight, only from the front or side, and only above the hip and below the neck. Illegal body-checks fall under Rule 70.
- Women's field (2025-2026 v1.0, Rule 23.A.2). A check to the head is a major foul that requires a mandatory warning card.
- Sixes (2026-2028 v2.0, Rule 8.3.1). Body-checking in any form is prohibited, for both women and men.
Later versions of the men's book (1.1, January 2026) and the women's book (1.1, March 2025) exist but were not read. US high school and college contact rules are on college and high school rules.
Age groups
No official 2026 USA Lacrosse birth-year age chart was found. Charts circulating under that name appeared only on unofficial repost sites and are not used here.
