Haudenosaunee Nationals

The Haudenosaunee Nationals: results from 2022 to 2026.

The Haudenosaunee Nationals represent the Six Nations Haudenosaunee Confederacy and compete as a full member of World Lacrosse, in men's, women's, junior, box and sixes events. This page collects their results since 2022 as World Lacrosse and the named press published them. Their history is on a separate page.

Status on 23 October 2026

  • Women's World Championship 2026 (finished): fourth, the women's best finish (World Lacrosse).
  • Men's World Championship 2027 (upcoming, Tokyo, 18 to 27 June 2027): qualified by winning bronze at the 2026 Pan-American Men's Championship (World Lacrosse).
  • Pan-American Sixes 2026 (finished): a single local press report, seen only as a search summary, gives the men bronze and the women fourth. That is unconfirmed, and so is whether either team qualified for the 2027 World Sixes Championships.
  • Los Angeles 2028: whether the Nationals can play as their own team is unresolved; we found no IOC decision dated 2026. The dated facts are on lacrosse at the Olympics.

Who they are

The Haudenosaunee Nationals say the team was formed in 1983 as the Iroquois Nationals, sanctioned by the Grand Council of the Haudenosaunee, and took its present name in 2022. The Grand Council, the team says, sanctions women's, men's and youth teams in indoor, field and sixes lacrosse. World Lacrosse described the Nationals in November 2023 as a full member. This page uses the name in force at each date.

The year of admission. Three independent sources, the Harvard Project's Honoring Nations profile (2002), historian Allan Downey (2012) and the Smithsonian's American Indian magazine (2021), say the men's team was admitted to the International Lacrosse Federation in 1987, after being refused a place at the 1986 world championship. Wikipedia gives 1988, an older team brochure gives 1992 for full nation status, and a 2025 Syracuse.com article gives 1985. We use 1987. American Indian magazine says the federation recognised the women's team in 2008. The full story is on the Haudenosaunee Nationals.

Junior results

The junior bronze run, two versions. World Lacrosse's 2022 release called that bronze the Haudenosaunee's fourth in a row since 2008. Its 2025 release said the 2025 result ended a run of three straight bronze medals. The two releases do not agree, and we found nothing that settles it.

Sixes and The World Games

  • 2026 Pan-American Sixes, Oshawa: men's bronze over Puerto Rico, and women fourth after losing the bronze game to Puerto Rico, according to a single local press report (insauga.com) seen only as a search summary. Unconfirmed.
  • 2025 PALA Sixes Cup, Humacao, Puerto Rico: the Haudenosaunee won both titles. The men beat Puerto Rico 15-12 to finish 5-0, and the women beat Puerto Rico 16-9, keeping the title they won in 2023. World Lacrosse's report of 15 December 2025 says the top three women's teams qualified for the 2026 Women's World Championship.
  • 2025 Super Sixes, Oshawa (ending 12 October 2025): the men won bronze, beating Australia 14-13; the women were fourth, losing the bronze game 14-8 to Canada White (World Lacrosse; Turtle Island News).
  • The World Games 2022, Birmingham: the men lost 20-16 to Japan in the preliminary round on 10 July 2022 and went to the fifth-place game against Australia on 11 July (World Lacrosse). World Lacrosse's report does not give the final placing. Wikipedia, in a search summary, gives fifth for the men and seventh for the women; the 2025 Syracuse.com article gives fifth for the men and eighth for the women. The women's placing is therefore unconfirmed.

How they came to play in 2022. On 14 August 2020 World Lacrosse, the International World Games Association and the Birmingham organisers said, at World Lacrosse's request, that Haudenosaunee men's and women's teams would be eligible if they qualified under World Lacrosse's criteria. The World Games said on 11 July 2022 that Ireland Lacrosse, which had already qualified, gave up its place so the Nationals could compete. The 2025 Syracuse.com article, republished by the Onondaga Nation, says the men were first ruled ineligible because they have no National Olympic Committee, and that the ruling was reversed. The World Games called Birmingham the first multi-sport global event at which the team competed for gold.

Before 2022, in brief

The Onondaga Nation says the Iroquois Nationals first played a world championship in 1990 in Perth, Australia, travelling on Haudenosaunee passports. American Indian magazine says the men won bronze at the world championships of 2014 and 2018 and silver at the 2015 world indoor championship, which the Onondaga Nation hosted. In 2010 the team did not play the world championship in Manchester, England, because the United Kingdom would not accept its passports. In box lacrosse, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame records the Iroquois Nationals losing world indoor finals to Canada in 2003 and 2007; see box lacrosse trophies.

Six Nations box lacrosse

The Six Nations Chiefs, a Major Series Lacrosse club playing at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, are a club side, not the national team. They won the Mann Cup, Canada's senior A box title, in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Wikipedia records a fourth straight title in 2026, which we could not confirm from any other source.
